Things to do - Activities, Wildlife & Attractions

Delve into history

Stirling Castle can be seen from the farm fields across the flatland of the Carse of Stirling being only 10 miles away. Closer by is Doune Castle the location for the film Monty Python's Holy Grail and more recently Outlander.  Then just along the road is Inchmaholme Priory which is on the magical wooded island in the middle of the Lake of Menteith.

Discover wildlife

The farm, Flanders Moss and the surrouding area are full of accessible wildlife!  You may be visited by a roe deer especially Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi as there is a deer that lives in the woodland. Or at your feet on the walkways there may be a  lizard basking in the sun! Insert picture of basking lizard.

Leave the City Behind

Imagine waking up to the sound of skylarks, meadow pipits, bubble bees and the everyday living world of West Moss-side organic farm and maybe Rhona, Tara, Jura, Evergreen or one of the young heifers, Kale, Linga, or Laura saying good morning in the way that Shetland cows do!  and your kettle whistling on the stove. Calving takes place each year in June/July.

Chill Out

Follow the natural cycle of the day and let the time unfold naturally.  In the evening you can chill-out by the yurts and star gaze into the un-polluted dark night or be snug inside with a book and a glass of wine.  But then you could go up to the village of Thornhill which is just a mile and a quarter away where there is a country pub and hotel with excellent food.

If you would like to combine your stay with a number of therapies including Yoga, Thai Massage, Reiki, Aromatherapy, etc we can put you in touch with qualified and experienced local practitioners who will come to West Moss-side. Alternatively, there are a number of health centres in the surrounding villages.

Canoeing & Kayaking

The Loch Lomond National Park has a wide variety of paddling opportunities from open water on the many lochs, to meandering rivers such as the Endrick, Balvaig and Forth. For the experienced paddler there are more challenging rapids and falls on Rivers Falloch, Leny and Dochart.

Make Something!

There are art, craft and cooking workshops available at weekends at West Moss-side with small numbers you will be able to learn a new skill – basket making, rush weaving, birch craft, felt work, pottery, batik, natural paper making, painting and drawing and more. Check out the West Moss-side website for the course schedule or let us know with lots of time what you would like to do and we will try and accommodate.

Bikes can be hired close by at  Wheels Cycling Centre.  For longer trips you really are in the heart of Scotland so you can be in Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth within the hour and there are good trains from Stirling.

Being situated at the gateway to the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park our location is ideal as a focus for exploring the area. Or make us your base and use our superb location to explore the surrounding area and further afield where you will find brilliant walking/hiking/cycling/kayaking/touring with plenty to see and do.
